Final Draft

Currently, we live in the age of technology. For the past few years technology has been rapidly developing from huge box televisions to paper thin smart television, from flip and slide phones to smartphones, and from human-run machines to auto-run machines. There are many benefits to the fast advancement in machines however there are drawbacks as well. The development of machines could bring not only efficiency and productivity but also a great challenge to humans such as a loss of humanity.

Due to the high-level of technology in machines, machines are capable of completing repetitive jobs at a high speed perfectly. Thus businesses extremely benefit from these machines because companies are able to sell a large number of goods to a wide range of customers due to the fast pace of producing goods. For example, in order for Toyota to gain a large profit, they have to produce a large amount of cars and also sell the cars at a much higher price than its cost of production. Imagine if companies such as Toyota were not able to make use of machines in order to produce cars. They would have to hire a lot of workers to work on one car, which would not only take significantly longer but also cause more mistakes and accidents than a machine produces. Another example would be the functions of a computer. Computers nowadays, can give you information of whatever you want when you ask for it. However, without the computer’s internet, it would take forever to find a definition of a word in a hardcopy dictionary, when it can take a second on the computer. The fast paced and exact results the machines produce would definitely lead the world to becoming a more efficient and progressive world for everyone.

Machines nowadays, has not been only able to produce goods that humans aren’t capable of, but they are even capable of thinking on their own. Recently, Google produced a machine that could play janggi or Korean chess called Alpha Go. The machine was later brought to Korea to play one of the best Korean chess players in the world. They played a round of janggi but the high-level technology that was put into Alpha Go helped the machine beat the Korean chess player with ease. However, a few months later the Korean chess player asked for a rematch and eventually beat the Alpha Go machine. This proves how intelligent machines is capable of pushing humans towards new and unimagined possibilities.

Unfortunately, excessive use of technology could affect our own humanity. Smartphones have replaced friends and families for many people. Before there were smartphones that were able to send text messages, watch YouTube videos and use the internet, people were a lot more social than they were today. At the dinner table, it was common for many families to have a quiet dinner full of people staring at their phones, instead of sharing how their day went today. Intelligent machines like smart phones can no longer require humans to talk to each other in person due to the advanced and wide range of social medias in the internet.  When a machine replaces our friends and family, we lose some part of our humanity.

Everyday, machines are being studied on how it could improve and how it could become more efficient and convenient. Improvements in machines would cause demands for the machines to rapidly increase as machines are capable of decreasing the need for human activity. Unfortunately, machines can also be harmful to humanity. However, through the continuous fast paced advancements in the development of machines, machines will be able to do more good than harm.

Reflection

This was also a difficult piece because I was under pressure from time just like the SAT essay. One of my weaknesses is that I have trouble in quickly thinking and creating ideas on the spot.
