Final Draft
One can never win a fight against sleep. It is common for students to not get enough sleep during school days. Research shows that prolonged lack of sleep has been linked to increased risk of depression and anxiety, as well as deficits in memory and learning capabilities.
Most students require a minimum of 8 hours of sleep every day, but many fail to achieve this mainly due to factors such as school starting at 7:50, after school activities, and the heavy homework load. As a result, many students tend to exhibit signs of sleep deprivation during school hours because there’s simply no way they can get the necessary amount of sleep while meeting all their obligations.
School is supposed to teach students, not damage their health. School schedules should be adjusted so that students can get the necessary amount of sleep to function properly.
Rough Draft
One can never win a fight against sleep. It is common for students to not get enough sleep during school days, and research shows that it is natural for such thing to happen. Students require a minimum of at least 8 hours of sleep everyday, but many fail to do so. Mainly due to factors such as, school starting at 7:50 AM and the heavy homework load. As a result, many students tend to feel lethargic and drowsy during school hours.
Sleep is so strong that it doesn’t only effect your learning and your performance in class, but it also effects your mental health as it could cause depression and anxiety and ruin your circadian rhythm.
Reflection
I really enjoyed writing this opinion piece because we were told to write a maximum of 150 words. I didn’t have to worry about being detailed and at the same time I got to write about what I want to write, instead of a given topic.
Really nice piece Sungmin! Your use of word choice really showed a strong sense of voice and passion throughout this whole piece. I also agree that sleep is important and school should start later.

Studies have actually shown that students who start school later in the day perform more optimally than those who start later. As students, we all suffer from the lack of sleep to varying degrees, but it has been getting worse later. Thank you for voicing your opinions on this, because I agree one hundred percent.

I agree that sleep is a big problem for teenagers today. I personally believe that sleep is for the weak. But I’m starting to think that people who do choose to sleep early are not weak but wise. I think that school hours should either be shortened or that school should start later. I am so sleep deprived that when I see 3(2) i do 3+2 rather than 3 X 2. Seeing you always sleeping in study hall, I think that you must also be very sleep-deprived. You make great points on why schools should change their starting times.
